Title: Enter the title you want for the page here. This is what will show up in the menus by default and what will show up in the title tag (if not overridden by Yoast)
Permalink: This will auto generate based on the title tag. You can customize it too if you would like.
Content Editor: This is where you will enter the content that goes on the page. You can use traditional editor “Classic Mode” which is the default or you can use Visual Composer “Backend Editor” if you want more control over layouts.
Classic Mode Visual Editor: Visual editor is similar to Microsoft Word in that what you see is what you get. There are a set of tools at the top that allow for easy formatting.
Classic Mode Text Editor: This view shows the html of the content block.
Backend Editor: Please refer to the visual composer training for information on VC.
Publish, Page Attributes, etc.
Parent (hierarchy) – You can set a page to be a child of another page by selecting a page to be the parent page. This will update the URL to be domain.com/parent-page-url/current-page-url/ instead of simply domain.com/current-page-url/
Template – The templates are part of the active theme. They control some of the overall formatting on the page. To switch templates you just change it via the dropdown.
Change publish date – You can change when a post/page was published by editing the date. The most common usage for this would be if you are adding in blog posts and you want them dated the same as when the post was written.
Preview and Publish/Update – The changes will not be visible to site visitors until you publish or update the changes. You can use the preview button to see what the changes will look like. Once you are ready to commit the changes then you can publish or update the page.
SEO Yoast & Page Options
- SEO Yoast – With SEO Yoast installed and activated on the site you can customize the page title and meta descriptions on each page. It will also give you tips for optimizing the page but please don’t rely entirely on their tips as they may not utilize Google’s best practices at all times as Google makes changes to their algorithms.
- Theme specific options – Each theme will have their own quirks and uniqueness to them. For example, Bridge theme has all of its site wide style settings inside of the Qode Options menu item. Other themes will usually have their own option page as well.
Posts
- Posts
- The functionality of posts are very similar to pages. The main difference with posts is that they have a hierarchy to them, primarily used for blogs or newsfeeds.
- Featured Image – With posts, you can set a featured image that will show up on the blog feed and category pages and depending on the theme, it may also show up on the blog post itself.
- Categories – You can add categories to posts. You can also use tags as another means of sorting out content.
- Custom Posts
- Portfolio, Testimonials, Masonry Gallery, etc.
- The above items are all examples of custom post types. Custom posts are created to perform a very specific function and what you can do with them depends on what they were built for. For example, testimonials post type allows once central location for entering testimonials that can then be used throughout the site with the use of a shortcode or some other add-on.
