Free listings let any retailer with a Google Merchant Center account show products across Google’s surfaces at no cost. No Google Ads account required, no per-click charge, no bidding.

The core idea:

  • Merchants don’t pay Google to appear in these listings.
  • Ad spend has no effect on ranking.
  • Ranking depends on merchant quality, product data quality, user engagement, and other relevance signals, the same kind of thing that drives organic search ranking, not paid ranking.

How to get set up today:

  1. Create a Google Merchant Center account and get your website verified.
  2. Submit a product data source (formerly called a “feed”) with accurate titles, images, pricing, and availability.
  3. Once products are approved, free listings are on by default. There’s no separate opt-in step anymore.

Where products show up:
Free listings aren’t limited to the Shopping tab anymore. Approved products can appear across:

  • Google Search results
  • The Shopping tab
  • Google Images
  • Google Lens
  • YouTube
  • Google Maps (for local inventory, if linked to a Business Profile)
  • Google’s AI surfaces (AI Overviews, Gemini, AI Mode)

How this relates to paid Shopping/Performance Max:
Free listings and paid Shopping ads work side by side, not in competition. Paid campaigns get reserved, prioritized placement (via Performance Max or Shopping campaigns), and free listings fill in around them. Running both gives a client more total shelf space on Google for the same feed.

What actually drives performance:
Since bidding has no effect here, feed quality is the whole game. Clean titles, correct GTINs/identifiers, accurate availability and pricing, and complete product attributes are what determine whether a product surfaces at all, let alone ranks well. This is the same feed hygiene work that improves paid Shopping performance too, so cleaning up a feed benefits both channels at once.
