Shopify’s structure is kind of weird. Here’s the short version:
Templates are a group of sections configured to give your online store a consistent design and feel. When you edit a template, your changes apply to every page that uses that template. In Shopify, we create templates for all pages and assign them to specific pages. So the template is often what’s actually driving what a page looks like, not the page itself.
If you edit a default template, those changes ripple across every page using that template. But if you create a custom page template, you’re crafting something that can be assigned to specific pages without disturbing others.
Before editing anything, check whether you’re editing a shared template (which will affect multiple pages) or an individual page’s content. If you need a page to look different from others of the same type, you’ll need to create a new template and assign it to that page first.
- Log in to your Shopify admin and go to Online Store > Themes
- Find your active theme and click Customize
- Use the page selector dropdown at the top center to navigate to the page you want to edit
- Add, remove, and reorder sections to structure your page. Within sections, use blocks as individual content pieces like text, images, buttons, or product titles.
- Click any section or block to edit its content in the panel on the left
- Use the device icons in the top toolbar to preview desktop and mobile views
- Click Save when finished to publish the theme
To edit a standalone page (like About or FAQ):
- Go to Online Store > Pages and click the page you want to edit
- Edit text directly in the content field using the rich text editor
- To edit the HTML code for the page, click the button to view the HTML and make changes directly. This is useful for embedding media, custom formatting, or adding code that the basic editor doesn’t support
HTML tip: If you need to write or edit HTML but aren’t sure where to start, paste the existing HTML into Claude (or another AI) and describe what you want to change in plain English. AI is very good at reading and editing HTML, so you don’t need to know how to write it from scratch. Just ask for what you want, copy the result back in, and preview it before saving.
- You can also use Shopify Magic to automatically generate a title and content for your page — it’s available in all languages supported by Shopify.
- Click Save
